Program notes

June 25, 1923 saw the premiere of Manuel de Falla's El retablo de Maese Pedro (Master Peter's Puppet Show), a unique and essential work of the Spanish stage, attended by the likes of Pablo Picasso and Paul Valéry—and 100 years later, the Festival de Granada brings it to life once more at the world-famous Alhambra! Don't miss this one-of-a-kind chamber opera featuring the esteemed City of Granada Orchestra led by Aarón Zapico, an award-winning vocal cast (with soprano Alicia Amo ably taking up the difficult role of Trujamán), and giant puppets designed by Enrique Lanz, leader of the renowned Compañía Etcétera (and grandson of Hermenegildo Lanz, who collaborated with Falla on the Parisian premiere a century ago). The program also spotlights two other Cervantes-inspired pieces: Georg Philipp Telemann's French-flavored Burlesque de Quixotte and excerpts from Joseph Bodin de Boismortier's comic opera-ballet Don Quichotte chez la Duchesse.
