Midori — Violinist

Program notes

"I could have stayed in this job for a lifetime," wrote Johann Sebastian Bach in a letter to his friend Georg Erdmann, referring to his position as Kapellmeister in Cöthen, Saxony. During his time in that post from 1717 and 1723, Bach wrote many of his best-known works, including the Brandenburg Concertos, Solo Cello Suites, and Sonatas and Partitas for Solo Violin. Almost 300 years later, the violinist Midori performs his masterpieces of the solo violin repertoire in the castle of Cöthen where Bach works all those years ago! In 1720, Bach created these pieces whose technical and artistic difficulties—distilled into alternating dances, fugues, and preludes—make their music as challenging as it is rewarding.
