Program notes
The Six Suites for Cello by JS Bach are widely regarded as some of the most iconic works in the cello repertoire. The work was, almost unbelievably, a forgotten memory until its resurgence in the 20th century (almost three centuries after its first performance) at the hands of the cellist and conductor, Pablo Casals. Even if he was loosely considered as unfashionable until his rediscovery, the genius of Bach’s writing has certainly stood the test of time, and is made manifest in the Six Suites for Cello. In this performance, the French cellist Jean-Guihen Queyras is joined by four dancers and choreographer Anne Teresa de Keersmaeker to create a new homage to the composer.
