Program notes
Described as "one of today’s best quartets in the world," the Modigliani Quartet takes the stage of the Thessaloniki Concert Hall for a concert of chamber music masterpieces by Mozart and Ravel, part of the 3rd International Chamber Music Festival in Thessaloniki!
The performance begins with Mozart’s String Quartet No. 3. in G Major from the cycle of six Milanese Quartets, written in 1772-3 when he was sixteen years old. An early Classical work, it derives inspiration from Hadyn’s model of the quartet while conveying Mozart’s modern and innovative approach to composition. Innovation was equally central to Ravel’s creative outlook: The submission of his String Quartet in F Major for a composition prize led to his expulsion from the Paris Conservatory for the second time, as Ravel’s unconventional, modernist ideas divided critical opinion. Heavily influenced by Debussy’s vibrant tone colors, the quartet nevertheless enjoyed success with the public and became the composer’s first major success.
