Program notes

Early music expert Nicholas McGegan helms an evening of 18th-century favorites at the Aspen Music Festival and School's 75th anniversary season, joined by virtuoso cellist Steven Isserlis, as well as artists from the Aspen Opera Theatre and VocalARTS Program! Bach's jubilant cantata "Jauchzet Gott in allen Landen" — featuring memorably virtuosic turns for the soprano and the trumpet — and selections from Handel's Orlando form the center of the program, surrounded by two beloved works by Haydn: the Overture from his most successful opera, Orlando Paladino (inspired, like Handel's opera, by the epic poem Orlando furioso about a knight driven mad by love), and the sublime Cello Concerto in C, undiscovered until 1961 and now a cello repertoire favorite, performed with exquisite sensitivity and wit by Isserlis.
