Program notes

Experience the magic of the prodigious pianist Nobuyuki Tsujii in a stunning recital, broadcast live from the 2022 Verbier Festival! Blind since birth and described by The Observer as the "definition of virtuosity," the astonishing artist offers a beautifully planned Romantic-flavored program that explores 19th-century piano repertoire by Beethoven, Liszt, and Chopin.

Tsujii opens his program with Beethoven's very famous "Moonlight" Sonata No. 14 in C-sharp Minor, breaking convention with its soft and plaintive first movement before unleashing furious cascades of arpeggios in the finale. The pianist continues with Liszt's heart-stopping Consolation No. 3, the best known of a set of six delicate miniatures, before moving on to the solo piano version of the First Mephisto Waltz, diabolical and virtuosic. To cap off the evening, Tsujii interprets Chopin's sublime Barcarolle and epic Piano Sonata No. 3 in B Minor.
