Program notes

Travel back in time with Myung-Whun Chung who conducts three iconic composers from the French 20th century: Claude Debussy, Olivier Messiaen and Camille Saint-Saëns.

The great success encountered by medici.tv's partnership with the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France leads to another season of live concerts! First broadcast from this 2013-2014 series: the orchestra pays tribute to three great French composers of the past century...

The concert opens with the rarely performed Rhapsody for clarinet and orchestra by Debussy, performed by Nicolas Baldeyrou, the orchestra's first clarinet since 2011 and an internationally reknowned soloist. Composed in 1910 for the Paris Conservatory's clarinet competition, this masterpiece is best-known in its version for clarinet and piano.

The orchestra then plays Olivier Messiaen's L'Ascension followed by Saint-Saëns's Symphony No. 3 with organ. Those two works were recorded by Myung-Whun Chung with the Orchestre de l'Opéra Bastille twenty years ago in 1993...
