Program notes
March 23, 1783... All Vienna is abuzz in anticipation of Mozart’s latest concert concoction at the prestigious Burgtheater: an exciting program of more than three hours, mixing symphonies and concertos with operatic arias of incredible virtuosity and moving expressivity. The astonishing musical event is dedicated to two preeminent sopranos: Aloysia and Josepha Weber, his wife Constanze’s sisters, for whom Mozart would compose some of his greatest masterpieces, including The Magic Flute’s legendary Queen of the Night role. Nearly two and a half centuries later, join the superb French soprano Sabine Devieilhe, Raphaël Pichon, and his orchestra Ensemble Pygmalion at Compiègne’s magnificent Théâtre Impérial for a concert inspired by that remarkable event, by Mozart, and by the composer's greatest muses.
