Program notes
Following their roundly celebrated outings in 2020 and 2022, Sir Simon Rattle and the prestigious Chamber Orchestra of Europe team up once again — this time with Sir Simon's wife, the stupendous mezzo-soprano Magdalena Kožená, for an era-spanning evening charged with emotion at the famous Esterházy Palace! After a spirited opening with Dvořák's tempestuous Scherzo Capriccioso, Sir Simon and the COE welcome Kožená for two irresistible song cycles: five of Bartók's treasured Hungarian Folk Songs, inspired by tunes he collected traveling around his homeland; and Mahler's sublimely lyrical Rückert-Lieder, a work that marked a turning point in his compositional style. The grand finale is Schubert's majestic Symphony No. 9 — likely his most innovative and masterful symphony, inspired by Beethoven and known fittingly as "the Great."
