Program notes

For more than 20 years, the Berliner Philharmoniker’s annual summer concert has taken place in Berlin’s Waldbühne. Enjoy yet another summer concert in one of Europe’s favorite outdoor amphitheatres.

Under the baton of its artistic director Sir Simon Rattle, together with the Rundfunkchor Berlin and renowned soloists Camilla Tilling, Nathalie Stutzmann, Joseph Kaiser and Dimitry Ivashchenko they perform one of Beethoven’s best-known compositions, the Symphony No. 9. The Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto in E minor, with soloist Christian Tetzlaff, captivates the audience with far-reaching, extensive and cantabile melodies and a formal structure that breaks with the conventions of the classical concerto.
