Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra
Program notes
"Nothing less than a miracle," reads a rave review in Dutch newspaper NRC, "is what happens when [Tarmo] Peltokoski conducts the Rotterdam Philharmonic in Sibelius’s Second Symphony. Staggering, breathtaking, tear-jerkingly beautiful. Even writing about it brings back the goosebumps. Tarmo Peltokoski. Write down that name." Just 22, Peltokoski joins forces with the celebrated RPhO for this poetic masterpiece of symphonic lyricism—"a confession of the soul," in the words of the composer. This stirring work presents the perfect opportunity for the celebrated ensemble to showcase the talent of each orchestral member, particularly in the symphony’s prominent woodwind solos.
Tarmo Peltokoski is Principal Guest Conductor at the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen, and the first conductor to hold this position in the orchestra’s 42-year history. He made his debut with the hr-Sinfonieorchester, and has also performed with the Orchestra of the Komische Oper Berlin, the Basel Chamber Orchestra and the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra, Helsinki Philharmonic, Tapiola Sinfonietta, Sinfonia Lahti, and the Finnish National Opera Orchestra. He has recently been named Music and Artistic Director of the Latvian National Symphony Orchestra, with his tenure to begin in the 2022-23 season. As a pianist, Peltokoski was named Young Musician of the Year by the Pro Musica Foundation in 2018.
