Program notes

The "superbly talented youth orchestra" (New York Classical Review) NYO2 shows off its remarkable artistry at the Morton H. Meyerson Symphony Center in Dallas, led by conductor and pianist Teddy Abrams in a passionate program that includes KINSFOLKNEM, a Carnegie Hall co-commission by Emmy-winning composer Jasmine Barnes! The lineup also includes the operatic grandeur and memorable melodies of Leonard Bernstein's Symphonic Dances from West Side Story, plus a swooningly romantic work inspired by Tony and Maria's famous predecessors: Tchaikovsky's Romeo and Juliet. The grand finale is the 1919 Suite from Stravinsky's The Firebird, full of evocative leitmotifs, bold chromaticism, and the kind of implacable rhythmic irregularity that marked Stravinsky as an iconoclastic new voice in the early 20th-century landscape.
