Program notes

Don’t miss the Tsinandali Festival 2023! Every year since 2019, the greatest performers, conductors, composers, and artists from all over the world have joined forces for 10 days in the magnificent village of Tsinandali, in eastern Georgia, to promote music in this region at the crossroads of Europe and Asia. The 2023 edition features a special celebration of the great Sergei Rachmaninov, marking 150 years since the legendary Romantic composer's birth.

The illustrious Marc Bouchkov, Zlatomir Fung, and Boris Giltburg join forces to perform in the festival’s Rachmaninov Anniversary Marathon, a tribute to phenomenal Georgian pianist Alexander "Lexo" Toradze. The trio begin with Rachmaninov’s Cello Sonata in G Minor, the composer’s final chamber work. Dedicated to prodigious Russian cellist Anatoily Brandukov, the first performance took place in Moscow with the composer himself as the pianist and Brandukov as the soloist. Next up is Rachmaninov’s equally brilliant Trio élégiaque No. 1 in G Minor, structured as a single long movement that is profoundly influenced by Tchaikovsky, his mentor at the time. Rachmaninov performed this composition in his official debut concert but wrote it in only four days, less than two weeks before the premiere!
