Program notes

Don’t miss the Tsinandali Festival 2023! Every year since 2019, the greatest performers, conductors, composers, and artists from all over the world have joined forces for 10 days in the magnificent village of Tsinandali, in eastern Georgia, to promote music in this region at the crossroads of Europe and Asia. The 2023 edition features a special celebration of the great Sergei Rachmaninov, marking 150 years since the legendary Romantic composer's birth.

This solo recital by Israeli pianist Boris Giltburg, who won the 2013 Queen Elisabeth Competition in Brussels, is part of the festival's Rachmaninov Anniversary Marathon, performed in honor of the late Alexander "Lexo" Toradze. Giltburg begins with the thrilling and monumentally difficult Piano Sonata No. 2 in B-flat minor, then moves on to the full set of Preludes from Op. 32, each a miniature sonic universe unto itself—including the wrenchingly beautiful No. 10 in B minor, Rachmaninov's own favorite among his Preludes.
