Program notes

One month after the 2019 edition of the prestigious Tchaikovsky Competition, join maestro Valery Gergiev and the winner of the competition's new woodwind category, Matvey Demin, for an exceptional concerto in Sapporo, Japan!

Premiered in 1894 in Paris, Prélude à l’après-midi d’un faune is one of Debussy’s shortest works but it is also one of his most performed, beloved from the day of its premiere. Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 4 is a dark, complex piece that suffered in popularity because of its composer’s difficult political relationship with the Soviet government: it was premiered in 1961 nearly thirty years after its completion! Shostakovich’s Memoires testify to the symphony’s origins in the cutthroat atmosphere that enveloped himself and his colleagues during a time marked by violence and tragedy.
