Program notes

The Palace of Charles V inside the world-famous Alhambra plays host to another exceptional concert from the 2024 Festival de Granada, as the grande dame of Russian piano Elisabeth Leonskaja takes the stage with the Orquesta Sinfónica de Castilla y León and dynamic conductor Vasily Petrenko! Leonskaja shines in the solo role of Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 4 in G — one of the greatest of all concertos, full of innovative flourishes from its unassuming solo piano opening onwards, and performed here by an artist who "has this music in her bones" (Gramophone). Petrenko and the OSCyL move on to Bruckner's Fourth, known as the "Romantic" Symphony and perhaps the best-loved of his nine, a series of programmatic tableaux that evoke a medieval town at daybreak and chivalrous knights on horseback.
