Program notes

One of the most exciting recent revelations in the classical music world, star cellist Sheku Kanneh-Mason returns to the Verbier Festival for its 30th anniversary edition to perform one of the monuments of the cello repertoire, Elgar's extraordinary Cello Concerto in E minor, with the Verbier Festival Chamber Orchestra and maestro Gábor Takács-Nagy! Featured prominently in the film Tár, the concerto—technically difficult, emotionally overwhelming—has been a signature piece for virtuosos like Jacqueline du Pré, Yo-Yo Ma, and Alisa Weilerstein, and Sheku's account is one of the best we've ever heard. VFCO and Takács-Nagy bookend the Elgar with two contrasting works: Brahms's poignant Tragic Overture and, as a grand finale, Schumann's bright and energetic "Rhenish" Symphony No. 3.
