Program notes

Catch every note of a superb concert version of one of the world's favorite operas, live from the 2023 edition of the Verbier Festival: under the baton of maestro James Gaffigan, the artists of the Verbier Festival Academy's Atelier Lyrique and the stupendous Verbier Festival Junior Orchestra perform Stravinsky's The Rake's Progress!

This 20th-century masterpiece recounts the adventures and misadventures of Tom Rakewell (performed by Christopher Willoughby), a young man who gives up a simple existence with Anne Trulove (Ava Dodd) to seek the riches promised by devilish stranger Nick Shadow (Vartan Gabrielian), who leads him into a life of debauchery and excess from which escape may be impossible. The score by Igor Stravinsky finds inspiration in 18th-century opera, blending virtuosic arias and recitatives for an unforgettable product marked by clever irony.
