Program notes

Renowned bass-baritone Bryn Terfel joins soprano Lise Davidsen, mezzo Yulia Matochkina, and Freddie De Tommaso for an earth-shaking performance of Verdi's epic Messa da Requiem, one of the highlights of the 30th anniversary edition of the Verbier Festival! The cast of powerhouse vocalists is rounded out by the Coro dell'Accademia di Santa Cecilia and the esteemed Verbier Festival Orchestra under the direction of maestro Daniele Gatti.

It is perhaps unsurprising that a requiem written by one of the most quintessentially operatic composers would take on an intensely dramatic character not often seen in ecclesiastically-set works—and this monument of the vocal repertoire has indeed been referred to as an "opera in disguise." Replete with striking tonal shifts, it appears almost to outline a narrative trajectory with the recurrent "Dies Irae," bold and terrifying, and with the arc of the soprano who, in the final "Libera me," seems to take on the role of “a beleaguered heroine trying finally to make sense of the world in which she has been cast” (Grove Music).
