Program notes
Since winning the Silver Medal at the 2019 Tchaikovsky Competition, Mao Fujita — known not just for his pristine technique and sensitive artistry, but also for his infectious grin and the evident joy he finds in making music — has established himself as an audience favorite all around the world, and as a beloved regular at the Verbier Festival. In 2024 he returns to the Swiss Alps for a solo recital blending high atmosphere (Lyric Pieces by Grieg, Chopin's kaleidoscopic Barcarolle) with bold virtuosity (Prokofiev's youthful Piano Sonata No. 1 in F minor), effervescent wit (Mozart's Variations on "Ah! vous dirai-je, Maman") and, finally, perhaps the finest achievement by one of the piano's most idiosyncratic poets: Robert Schumann's unconventional Kreisleriana, the composer's own favorite of his works.
