Nikolai Lugansky — Pianist

Program notes

"Not simply the most wonderful Russian pianist of modern times, [but also] one of the most outstanding artists of our epoch" (Le Monde), fiery piano virtuoso Nikolai Lugansky makes his anticipated return to the Verbier Festival with a program of high Romantic emotions! After a selection of Mendelssohn's supremely lyrical Songs without Words, Lugansky performs Chopin's Nocturne in D-flat, Op. 27, No. 2 — perhaps the dreamiest and most moonlit of them all — and swooning, stormy Ballade No. 4, then moves on to a second half devoted to Wagner, all selections from his 2024 album named one of the best of the year by Gramophone: formidable transcriptions of scenes from Götterdämmerung (by Lugansky himself) and of the immortal Liebestod from Tristan und Isolde (by Liszt).
