Program notes

Nobuyuki "Nobu" Tsujii was born without the ability to see, but no obstacle was too great to keep the Japanese piano virtuoso from achieving greatness. The winner of the 2009 Van Cliburn International Piano Competition returns to the Verbier Festival to take us on an international tour in a program of works inspired by foreign melodies: Bach's bright and stately French Suite No. 5; Liszt's interpretation of Italian gondola music and tarantella in Venezia e Napoli, a supplement to the Années de pèlerinage; Ravel's heartbreaking ode to a Spanish princess, the poignant Pavane pour une infante défunte; and, finally, the 8 Concert Etudes by Russian composer Nikolai Kapustin, irresistible blends of classical with American jazz, ragtime, and blues.
