Program notes

Maestro Tarmo Peltokoski leads the Verbier Festival Chamber Orchestra in a program brimming with vibrant symphonic color! Ravel’s enchanting suite Ma Mère l’Oye evokes a different fairy tale in each movement, from the gentle Pavane of Sleeping Beauty through to the radiant Fairy Garden. Continuing the magical theme is Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue, described by the composer himself as “a sort of multichrome fantasy, an American kaleidoscopic musical, with our [...] blues, our metropolitan madness.” The wondrous blend of classical music with jazz influences is beautifully brought to the fore by virtuoso Lucas Debargue. The concert finishes on a note of classical elegance and intricacy: Mozart’s Symphony No. 39 in E-flat Major, the first of his final three symphonies composed in 1788.
