Program notes

Generously supported by Madame Aline Foriel-Destezet

The Verbier Festival has established itself as a prestigious meeting point for the greatest violinists on the international scene. For the past 25 years, the beautiful stage in the Swiss Alps has seen living legends of the violin sharing the limelight with superstars of the next generation, as you will see (and hear) in this jam-packed program!

The program begins with Janine Jansen’s passionate, unforgettable performance of the Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto before Ivry Gitlis and Martha Argerich work their magic in an inimitable Fritz Kreisler miniature. In chamber music, Bach, Mozart, Schumann, Ravel and Shostakovich find the worthiest of interpreters in Salvatore Accardo, Antoine Tamestit, Vadim Repin, Lisa Batiashvili, Ilya Gringolts, Leonidas Kavakos and Anne-Sophie Mutter, bringing vigor and brio to their collaborations, dream teams for any classical fan to admire. Two moments of spectacular virtuosity crown this fiddlers' feast: Gidon Kremer puts his powerful technical mastery to work in Rochberg's devilish Caprice Variations, and Roby Lakatos—the most admired gypsy violinist of our time—joins forces with celebrated classical violinist Julian Rachlin for a moment of incendiary violin artistry.
