Program notes

The Quatuor Ébène joins Frans Helmerson for a concert at the Verbier church. They perform Schubert’s String Quintet in C Major.

Since 2008 the Quatuor Ébène has established itself as one of the rising star quartets of their generation: celebrated for their passion for to mix different genres, these musicians are equally renowned for their interpretations of major works from the classical repertoire. In the 2013 Verbier Festival, they were joined by Frans Helmerson for a performance of Schubert’s String Quintet in C Major. The Swedish cellist has conducted numerous Scandinavian orchestras and is one of the founding members of the Michelangelo Quartet.

Schubert’s String Quintet in C Major was the last work of chamber music he wrote. Rather than using the traditional string quintets instrumentation of a string quartet with an additional viola, Schubert’s work adds a second cello, giving the ensemble a much darker color palette.
