András Schiff, one of the most respected pianists alive, has always been selective in his repertoire and uninterested in cultivating the image of a superstar soloist, content to let his art speak for him. A virtuoso pianist, renowned conductor, and expert pedagogue, he has graciously shared his rigor and attention to detail with audiences and students alike at the Verbier Festival. The daring and innovative Quatuor Ébène, founded in 1999—“a string quartet that can easily morph into a jazz band” (The New York Times)—has been part of the festival for more than half its life, first at the hallowed training grounds of the Verbier Academy in 2007 and then on the main program since 2010!
In keeping with its collaborative spirit, the Verbier Festival has united Schiff and the Quatuor Èbène with magnificent results. As the festival demonstrates year after year, the alchemical magic of these collaborations hits on the essence of chamber ensembles: listening, sharing, and working in service of the music audiences love.
