Founded in 2000 by Martin T:son Engstroem to “espouse educational values and inspire young musicians through their interaction with world-class artists, creating mutual benefits for both the old and young,” the Verbier Festival Orchestra provides an indispensable training ground for gifted young instrumentalists. Rising talents aged 18 to 28 come from all over the world to work with leading international conductors and soloists—like Janine Jansen, Denis Matsuev, Daniil Trifonov, Yuja Wang, Khatia Buniatishvili, Paavo Järvi, Evgeny Kissin, Esa-Pekka Salonen, Yefim Bronfman, Sir Antonio Pappano, Joyce DiDonato, Martha Argerich, and Renaud Capuçon—and to prepare and perform at concerts during the festival.
Members of The Verbier Festival Junior Orchestra (aged 15-18) often transition from that ensemble, a musical summer camp orchestra, to the Verbier Festival Orchestra—and the 60 members of the Verbier Festival Chamber Orchestra are chosen from among VFO alumni. Since 2018, the preeminent ensemble has been in the capable hands of Maestro Valery Gergiev.
