Program notes
Led by maestro Vladimir Jurowski, the Evgeny Svetlanov State Academic Symphony Orchestra opens the “Another Space” 6th International Contemporary Music Festival with a concert of world premieres!
First on the program is Victor Ekimovsky’s Symphony No. 9 "Epitaph to the Avant-Garde", a work in which one of Moscow’s premiere contemporary composers bids farewell to the artistic movement he fostered, honoring both its “end” and its importance in fueling “technological progress that will endure for centuries.” Next comes Anton Safronov’s Imaginary Mono-Theater of Vladimir Mayakovsky for female voice and orchestra, a work inspired by the one-person show theatrical genre. Rounding off the evening is the third and final world premiere: Boris Filanovsky’s Throughchant on Woruld Sprouting (Propéven). Written for violin and accordion solo, vocal ensemble, chamber choir, and spatially distributed orchestra, the piece is a musical setting of the words of the painter and Russian poet Pavel Filonov.
