Program notes
For decades the Berliner Philharmoniker have brought their season to a spectacular close at the Waldbühne, a gorgeous outdoor venue under the stars at Berlin's Olympiapark. In 2023 they continue this beloved tradition with a dreamy program devoted to Romantic opera, led in the festivities by world-renowned conductor Andris Nelsons and joined by top tenor Klaus Florian Vogt, a regular at the Met and the Bayreuth Festival who makes his debut with the Berliner Philharmoniker here.
Alongside the fairytale world of Weber's Der Freischütz, our all-star cast treats us to excerpts from Wagner's Lohengrin—sung by Vogt, one of the finest Wagnerians of our day—and a lineup of favorites by Richard Strauss, including some of his most sublime Lieder and the orchestral suite from Der Rosenkavalier, outlining the opera's moments of utmost delicacy and thrilling turbulence as it evokes the splendor of 18th-century Vienna.
