Program notes

In 2014, audiences in Buenos Aires’s Teatro Colón were bowled over by a stunning performance of the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra under the baton of acclaimed maestro Daniel Barenboim, joined by hometown heroine Martha Argerich. Together they presented a polychromatic program of three centuries worth of music, spanning from Mozart (Overture to Le nozze di Figaro) and Beethoven (First Piano Concerto) to Ravel (Rhapsodie espagnole) and Mores (“El Firulete”), by way of Schuman (Fantasiestücke, Op. 12) and Bizet (Carmen Suite No. 1). A particular high point was Argerich’s interpretation of Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 1, a piece she performed as part of her Teatro Colón début at the tender age of eight years old!
