The Silkroad Ensemble
Program notes
At the Tanglewood Music Festival, the Silkroad Ensemble and its artistic director, the cellist Yo-Yo Ma, perform a program of popular and contemporary cross-cultural works.
Founded in 2000 by cellist Yo-Yo Ma as part of the Silk Road project, the Silkroad Ensemble is a multicultural musical ensemble that gathers together musicians, composers, arrangers, and visual artists from more than twenty different countries. Described by the Boston Globe as a "roving musical laboratory without walls", the ensemble interweaves musical heritages from all around the world, seeking to develop a "new musical language" that reflects society today. In promoting popular music from various cultures alongside contemporary works by composers from all around the world, the SilkRoad Ensemble has produced truly unique collaborations. A concert program of the ensemble is like a journey bridging humanity's cultural differences.
