2017 is the year of the fire rooster, and a very special year for the Grand Chinese New Year Concert: after close to 150 memorable performances all around the world, this annual concert tour devoted to traditional Chinese music celebrates its 20th anniversary! Tonight, Zhang Lie conducts the Guangdong National Orchestra of China at the Berlin Philharmonie with a program of music rarely heard in the West!
The Grand Chinese New Year Concert is one of the most successful yet unconventional events to visit classical music concert halls. Since 1998, performances have been held in about 20 countries on three continents, including in Germany, Italy, Switzerland, Austria, Czech Republic, the Netherlands, Belgium, Sweden, Finland, Norway, Egypt, Oman, Russia and the UK. Every year during the Chinese Spring Festival period, one of China’s most acclaimed traditional orchestras is selected to present a sample of the country's national musical tradition whilst touring some of the most renowned venues of Western metropolises.
