Montserrat Figueras
Program notes
The great Montserrat Figueras, a major figure in the early music movement, opens up about her life's journey and her views on art, music and song.
Through interviews and musical extracts, this film paints a vivid portrait of the Spanish soprano who brought her stunning vocal abilities to a vast medieval, Renaissance, and Baroque repertoire. By combining fidelity to historical sources with exceptional creativity and heartful expressivity, Figueras and husband Jordi Savall played a decisive role in the revitalization of early music.
Figueras performed at the leading festivals in Europe, America and the East over the course of her decades-long career, sadly passing away at 69 in 2011. Among the dozens of recordings she made, many received prestigious awards; she was nominated for multiple Grammy Awards and, in 2003, was granted the title of Officier de l'Ordre des Arts et Lettres (Officer of the Order of Arts and Literature) by the French government.
