Program notes

The first visual artist-in-residence at the prestigious Juilliard School in New York, Fabienne Verdier invites viewers to glimpse a world where music and painting don’t simply coexist—but also cooperate, collaborate, and inextricably inform one another in a synesthetic process. Verdier is joined by big names of the jazz and classical scenes, like pianist Kenny Barron, bassist Ray Drummond, conductor William Christie, and cellist Darrett Adkins.

The invention of a new pictorial language, in which visual and sonorous lines are closely linked, is the primary objective at this veritable interdisciplinary laboratory whose experimenters ceaselessly call into question common forms and modes of knowledge. Director Mark Kidel, who has won wide acclaim for his documentaries about important cultural and artistic figures, films the adventure with an astute eye (and ear) for the work of his subjects.
