Program notes

In 1960, the newly constructed Grosses Festspielhaus (Great Festival Hall) at the Salzburg Festival opened its doors to the public with a production for the ages: Strauss’s comic opera Der Rosenkavalier (The Knight of the Rose), with the great Herbert von Karajan leading the Vienna Philharmonic. Featuring a cast of legends including Elisabeth Schwarzkopf, still considered by many to be the greatest Marschallin in history, the production met with a resounding success and was captured for posterity on 35mm film.

Among the artists returning to discuss this seminal 1960 production for the Great Moments in Music series in 2020, as the Salzburg Festival celebrated its 100th anniversary, are conductor Franz Welser-Möst and singer Günther Groissböck—who took part in Salzburg’s recent production of Der Rosenkavalier in 2014—as well as star soprano Anna Prohaska. The film also accompanies André Heller as he fulfills a long-cherished dream, directing the new production of Der Rosenkavalier at the Berlin State Opera.
