Program notes
Heir to a rich family tradition, Mariss Jansons followed in the footsteps of his father, conductor Arvīds Jansons, from an early age. After a career spanning more than fifty years at the helm of some of the world's greatest orchestras, including the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra and the Bavarian Broadcasting Symphony Orchestra, he passed away in 2019. Four years later, his successors and renowned colleagues Daniel Harding, Manfred Honeck, Sir Simon Rattle, and Vasily Petrenko celebrate his remarkable passion and energy in a tribute concert, alongside the iconic orchestras that shared his musical journey. Through moving testimonies and captivating interpretations of some of classical music's finest masterpieces, they paint a portrait of one of the most inspiring figures of the 20th century.
