Program notes
Perhaps Argentina’s most celebrated composer, Piazzolla’s musical style is very unique. Influenced by both classical and jazz structures, the composer helped revolutionize tango during the 20th century, despite pushback from the genre’s strongest defenders and his musical contemporaries.
Piazzolla’s genius lies in his understanding of the art of seduction brought on by the complexity and the innovation of his writing. One aspect of his output that remains to be explored are his references to the works and composers of the past—a theme that runs through the vast majority of his works. Known as a passionate character with a strong personality, the composer is remembered by six of his closest relatives and friends, caught on camera by Pablo Rho.
