Program notes
For over twenty-five years, from New York to Lyon, Avishai Cohen has captivated the jazz world. This jazz master knows no bounds and escapes categorization with his stylistic fluidity and unique musical approach that caresses the spirit and fascinates the mind. His new project, Iroko in collaboration with Abraham Rodriguez Jr, is a muted, light-hearted blend of blissful nostalgia. The alliance of voices between the master of Afro-Caribbean music and Avishai's strings is based on tradition. The two musicians draw on the symbol of the iroko, the West African ritual tree both feared and venerated, to infuse their gentle, soaring melodies with a symbolic dimension.
The two versatile performers, Le Cri du Caire and Médéric Collignon, open the evening with a dazzling display of saxophone, Sufi chant, and musical trance—kick back under the stars in this ancient amphitheater and relax to the rhythms of soft jazz beats!
