Program notes
At the 1987 Fribourg Jazz Festival, two of the most talented jazz musicians, heirs to the great Django Reinhardt, join forces to pay tribute to the gypsy genius in a moving concert. Known as a prodigy from his early teens, Biréli Lagrène forged his reputation by covering to perfection the songs of the composer he had admired since childhood. While in his twenties he gradually moved away from them to experiment with his own compositions—establishing himself as a “revolutionary” jazzman—it is with undeniable pleasure that he returns to his original influences, with none other than Babik Reinhardt as his playing companion, son of Django and a renowned guitarist in his own right. From the first notes of the famous track “Nuages”, the atmosphere is electric: the performance is simply remarkable—and the press is quick to praise “the quality of the playing and the interaction between the two participants [which] will make you want to watch [...] again and again”—Jazz Times.
