Program notes
Cécile McLorin Salvant and her trio take over the Cité de la Musique in Paris for this 2015 edition of the Jazz à La Villette festival! The concert celebrates the release of her album For One to Love album, released the same year and awarded the prestigious Grammy Award for Best Jazz Vocal Album in 2016.
Born in Miami to a French mother and Haitian father, the Franco-American singer moved to Aix-en-Provence at the age of eighteen, where she studied classical and baroque singing. Her jazz teacher, saxophonist Jean-François Bonnel, encouraged to move to New York to pursue her career. A singer-songwriter, a composer, and even an illustrator, Cécile McLorin Salvant is an internationally renowned artist whose diverse repertoire includes jazz standards, original compositions, and arrangements of medieval music. When not on stage, she fills pages with magnificent watercolor illustrations and, as a student, she drew caricatures and other shocking drawings. To her, music is a means of tackling current societal issues with lightness, and of sublimating the depth of human feelings. From her theatrical interpretations to the poignant authenticity of her writing, this key figure in contemporary jazz never ceases to fascinate us!
