Program notes
“It's all about what you give.” Charles Bradley often says. “I don’t care how great a singer you are. I don't care how much talent you have. If you give, and if the people feel what you're giving, you're blessed.” And this is precisely what he did throughout his long career, which started late, at nearly fifty years old : he gave all of his soul to the public with the splendid modesty that characterized him.
Taking place at the Baloise Session in 2014, this concert is the perfect summary of how much of a free, passionate, and talented mind he was. It could furthermore be considered as the intimate quintessence of his personality, built upon James Brown’s scenic energy, Otis Redding’s soul sweetness and Sam Cooke’s powerful gospel voice.
Then 66 years old, Bradley takes the opportunity to show his love for life and for music to the galvanized public of the festival with this sumptuous performance. Maybe it is the best symbol one could remember from this mythical concert: the image of a humble and generous man, ending his career at its peak as an eternal rhythm ‘n’ blues icon. Moreover, he could also be recalled as a personification of the self-made man.
