Program notes
Few careers in jazz are more illustrious than that of the great Chick Corea. When he passed away in 2021, the world lost a compositional genius whose harmonic and inventive strides in jazz made him one of the most significant pianists of all time. Constantly curious, his life and works can be split into subsections, like Picasso's often is: jazz, jazz fusion, duets, solo piano, Latin music, electric. Chick succeeded each time he tackled a new soundscape and here we join him in the middle of his 'elektric' years, with the stellar cast that made up Chick Corea Elektric Band.
The year is 1987 and we are at the Munich Summer Piano Festival. With Chick as leader, on keyboards and computers, the line-up features Frank Gambale on guitar, Eric Marienthal on sax, John Patitucci on bass and Dave Weckl on drums. Together, they launch into a fusion set that is futuristic, both in style and in substance. To modern viewers, it may look dated, but at the time it represented a dream-like, forward-thinking adventure. The repertoire features tracks from the Grammy-winning Light Years, the album released by the band that same year, built by songs from Corea, Gambale and Patitucci.
