Program notes

In music notation a “ghost-note” is a note played for rhythmic, rather than harmonic purposes, often slightly hidden, in between the main notes of a melody. It isn’t hard to see why this outfit, founded by Robert “Sput” Searight (drums) and Nate Werth (Percussion), was named after this particular feature – Ghost-Note are a band known for their relentless infectious rhythms and the intricacy they look for with each track.

The two founders came from Snarky Puppy, Michael League’s world-beating jazz instrumental ensemble, and they brought the winning formula with them: percussive jazz that combines the best of contemporary improvised music with Afro-funk groove. It is open-minded, multicultural music that reflects the spirit of sharing and globalization in jazz.

Lauded by the geekier side of the jazz spectrum as well as by casual fans, Ghost Note have developed about as solid a reputation as its possible to get, standing at the intersection between beat science and high art. They also have a colorful signature look, thanks in part to the style of Dwayne MonoNeon Thomas and the stripey socks he hangs on the end of his bass.
