Program notes
The amount of 23-year-old female Polish bass players going on to conquer the European scene are few and far between. Indeed, it would take a special talent to break through like Kinga Glyk has. From playing in a family band to touring across borders for diverse crowds, she commands a touch for jazz funk and blues that is fast becoming unrivaled. With four albums to her name, she is also a prolific musician, having released her most successful LP to date, Feelings, just a year before this 2020 concert at the mythical New Morning venue in the heart of Paris.
She is now officially among the musicians that have walked that very same stage – Marcus Miller, Prince, Miles Davis, Chet Baker, Roy Hargrove – and she did so with confidence and dynamism, creating a rare bond with the Parisian audience who are famously within touching distance of the artists. It is also with a certain nonchalance that she allows her bass to weave gratifying, groove-led narratives, forming a voice whose eloquence she discovered as a child: "I was interested in the bass because it gave me an unusually powerful voice." This is just the start for a potential world-beater of an artist.
