Program notes

Throughout his career, Lee Konitz has performed regularly as a duo with his preferred pianists such as Michel Pertrucciani, Stefano Bollani, Brad Mehldau, and Martial Solal. It was through working with Solal that he was introduced to the American Dan Tepfer, winner of the prestigious piano competition at the Montreux Festival in 2016—Konitz’s chosen collaborator when exploring spontaneous counterpoint, delicate improvisations, and new variations of standards with the inspired creativity that only one of the giants in the history of jazz can muster.

American saxophonist Konitz is connected to the West Coast jazz movement through his work between 1949 and 1950 on the legendary sessions for the album Birth of the Cool by Miles Davis. Collaborating regularly with Lennie Tristano and Warne Marsh, Konitz developed very early his style with a unique depth, a rhythmic inventiveness, and exceptional melodies. He is equally, alongside Tristano and Marsh, associated with the liberty of jazz and improvisation that would rise during the 1960’s.
