Program notes

Meet drummer Terri Lyne Carrington for a soothing and impressive concert on the stage of the 2013 Lotos Jazz Festival. Aged 7, the jazz legend receives her first drum kit from her grandfather, it is the beginning of a great love story. Along the course of her career, she plays with famed musicians such as Stan Gets, Dizzy Gillespie, and Herbie Hancock. Here, accompanied by Gretchen Parlato, an illustrious singer and a fixture of the latin jazz scene, she gifts the audience with a breathtaking performance dedicated to the legacy of Duke Ellington.

A Berklee alumn, Carrington now teaches at the prestigious institution, where she was named a doctor honoris causa in 2013. In the 80's, it was Jack Dejohnette that urged her to move to New York, at the time one of the most vibrant jazz communities in the country. The young drummer takes her shot and collaborates with Stan Getz and James Moody. In 2012, she is awarded the Grammy Award for best vocal jazz album with The Mosaic Project, a masterwork at the crossroads between jazz, soul, and R&B, that Gretchen Parlato helped record.
