Program notes

Join the incomparable Thomas Quasthoff for a soulful concert that defies expectations: the celebrated German baritone sings soul and jazz classics at Berlin’s A-Trane Jazz Club. An evening full of surprises and truly first-class music-making!

When a kind of music has something to say to me, then I simply want to make it myself. It’s not just because of the texts. It’s because this music touches the soul… it’s about love, drama, madness, just like in classical music. —Thomas Quasthoff

For many musicians and music-lovers, the oft-drawn line between classical and popular music dissolves in the face of one overarching passion for good music. Clearly one of their number, Thomas Quasthoff plies his legendary technique and limitless expressivity to soul and jazz music favorites in this concert recorded live in 2010. He is joined on stage by guitarist Bruno Müller, keyboard player Frank Chastenier, bassist Dieter Ilg, and percussionist Wolfgang Haffner.
