Program notes

Yaron Herman lights up Paris's Théâtre de l'Athénée in an intimate concert! The celebrated jazz star performs captivating improvisations in the spirit of his album Alma, released in October 2022 as a distillation of the spark of spontaneity that makes Herman's genius.

Herman began studying the piano at 16 under the tutelage of another jazz master, Opher Brayer, whose holistic pedagogical approach incorporated aspects of philosophy, math, and psychology. Armed with these globalizing concepts and the knowledged gleaned along the way, Herman returned to the very sources of Western music to create his 11th album, made up of 17 improvisations. Indeed, until the end of the 16th century, improvisation was a widespread practice that began to decline with the advent of music notation. In Alma, the composer seeks to let go, with the desire to "always leave the door ajar to let in whatever is meant to arrive." The titles of his works vividly evoke the journey that led to their creation: pieces like RebirthAll the Things You AreHere and NowAprès un rêve (After a Dream) invite you to reflect on yourself and others, and on the nature of reality and dreams, while always leaving room for spontaneity…
