Program notes
In this master class, the legendary Mischa Maisky and student Sevak Avanesyan work on the last solo concerto Dvořák ever wrote: his beloved Cello Concerto. An essential piece of cello repertoire sometimes called the “king” of the genre, the three-movement concerto was composed in close collaboration with cellist Hanuš Wihan during a sojourn in the United States but eventually received its premiere in London with the English cellist Leo Stern as soloist.
