Program notes

As it has on every May 1 since 1991, the Berliner Philharmoniker commemorates the anniversary of its founding with the beloved Europakonzert, which brings the world-renowned orchestra to a different European city each year. The 2025 edition takes place in the majestic red and gold auditorium of the Teatro Petruzzelli in Bari, Italy, with revered Italian maestro Riccardo Muti leading the festivities! After a first half all'italiana with Rossini's rollicking William Tell Overture and Verdi's spirited cycle of Le quattro stagioni (The Four Seasons) from I vespri siciliani, they move on to Brahms's Second Symphony, composed on a picturesque lakeside and infused with pastoral splendor, bittersweet nostalgia, and resounding D-major triumph.
